Missed Opportunity
The session on Changing the Environment to Prevent Crime was a supreme disappointment. I thought from the title that we would discuss either changing the physical environment, as in adding green space or clean-up, or renting out abandoned buildings; or, changing the non-physical environment to create an atmosphere that enforces positive change in the community in order to deter crime. Instead we got a powerpoint presentation on how to lock your doors and put up a fence. Not only does that create a more hostile environment, but it simply encourages criminals to move on to another house....

Wasted Resources in Recycling
I was profoundly disappointed with the Neighborhood Summit, for a number of reasons. The session on recycling only shared information we learned in elementary school about what materials can be put in the bin; the community leaders and citizens in the room tried to talk about bigger efforts, asking what we can do more of to improve recycling in our neighborhoods, but all questions were answered with a suggestion to call the phone number, and no one could answer what kind of money these things would cost. We could have gotten more information from 10 minutes on their...

Helpful training
The Health Foundation always has affordable and informational trainings for the non-profit with a small buget. We were totally in the dark about how to make a website, worried about the cost and technical involvement needed, but this class helped to shed some light. ...

Foreclosure Prevention and Cincinnati Public Schools
The summit was excellent. This was my 5th out of 6 and they keep getting better.
In the Foreclosure prevention session, the information provided by Working in Neighborhoods was extremely useful.
Also the talk by the lawyer from the Attorney General of Ohio;s office was positive...

Foreclosures
The session should have been structured for three hours, largely because most of the elected officials could not limit themselves to the expectation of five-minutes of introductory comments...which resulted in less time for the Q&A. Also, the Moderator frequently complicated the flow.
The session was a disappointment more about process/structure than its substance. We needed more time for Q&A with the audience. Some persons in the audience are pros, but there was insufficient time for their expertise, questions, and experience to be manifested and to be shared.
I certainly plan to attend next year's Summit. The...

Big & Small
Cincinnati is a great city of small parts - neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has characteristics and varying needs that have morphed over the years. Programs like Invest in Neighborhoods, Citizens Resources, etc are good and effective but sometimes are too "well kept secrets." The varied topics and table displays were well thought out by the planning committee. I discovered resources, both public and private, which my organization in one of Cincinnati's oldest neighborhoods -Linwood- can use to be an effective and healthy small part of a big city. The Cintas Center is a wonderful facility for...

Great event
Thanks for making it happen. Xavier provided super facilities.
Perhaps consider adding some basics for Couuminuty Council governance. (tips for treasurers, newsletter best practices, etc.) There is a lot of turnover among volunteers and sometimes new board members need some help....

RJW REVIEW
I felt the 6th Annual Neighborhood Summit was overall a good experience. I liked that several sessions were topics not presented before. I also like hearing from citizens from different neighborhoods, learning what issues are of concern to them, and finding out if their issues are faced in my neighborhood. One negative thing about the program--it does not lend to much interaction between participants. In addition, I was in one session where the moderator let the speakers talk beyond the allowed time period and it pushed into the time for the next session. Overall, I...

Great event
I always enjoy attending the Neighborhood Summitt. The summitt gives you an opportunity to network with residents, organizations and government officials who are involved in making Cincinnati a better place to live, work and play. You also have an opportunity to see folks you haven't talked to in a while and meet new folks. Plus, the sessions are always timely and informative. One thing I did hear from a number of people this year was that the sessions should be more interactive and feature more residents. I agree. Allowing residents to lead sessions and to talk with one another during...

Allow more time for discussion
In general, I think the presenters should be given less time, to allow more time for Q&A/discussion.
The session on Schools as Community Learning Centers did a good job of getting the attendees involved in the discussion, but other sessions left little time for attendee feedback/discussion....

2007 Summit Review
I attended three sessions: foreclosure, smart zoning, and state reps.
Each session was pretty good, average or better, but I was a little concerned that the foreclosure and zoning sessions were both what I call top down. I don't know about the zoning issues, but there are a number of grass roots people that are involved in the foreclosure issue that could have been part of the panel of presenters.
It's good for the elected officials to take ownership of the issues. But isn't the summit also supposed to be about what the neighborhoods and community leaders are doing...

Budget Session full of lots of take home information

I also learned how my neighborhood can request capital dollars through the Community Priority Request (CPR) process....

Grant Writing class for beginners
I attended the Grant writing session at 9:30 in the main room. The class was informative and helpful, if you are wanting to know how to begin to write grants. Alen Llyod, who runs the main library's Grant Resource Center was helpful in laying out the basic resources to write a grant, mainly the Foundation Center.
The woman who spoke next told us about the importance of matching your mission and requested amount to the Foundations' past giving patterns.
All and all, I would recommend this session for beginners wanting to hear common sense, and to be reminded of good...

Summit Kickoff Dinner
Dr. Owens was the only speaker at the dinner which also recognized 15 community activists from 14 communities that have served their neighborhoods well.
Dr. Owens' message is always related to getting to a person's heart and engaging their mind. Personal connections are more needed by elected leadership than hyped themes. Owens engages all citizens to help the city.
Conscious contact with citizens providing solutions. Owens is always a class act and makes you feel valued as a human being.
The Mayor opened the Summit the next day....

Overview 6th Annual Cincinnati Neighborhoods' Summit
Engagement of Cincinnati citizens to direct and construct dialogue with elected officials of city, county and state levels was above any gathering prior. Citizens asked for, deliberately tended their questions to get deeper answers of processes that serve them daily. That tenacity was the hallmark of the entire day.
Inclusion of tables for councils/organizations made a difference for an event that once seemed inundated by city departments as opposed to the citysoliciting information from THE NEIGHBORHOODS.
Positive city departments' efforts at table were more interactive with videos and people than before. Showing that people at City Hall have begun to listen and...
